Weyerhaeuser Uruguay S.A., Colonvade S.A. and Los Piques S.A. are all operations wholly owned by Weyerhaeuser Company in Uruguay.

Weyerhaeuser established its presence in Uruguay in 1996 through a joint venture in Colonvade S.A. Los Piques was purchased from West Fraser Timber Company of Canada and Associates in June 2001. In 2006 Weyerhaeuser established its wholly owned subsidiary, Weyerhaeuser Uruguay, which assumed 100 percent ownership in Colonvade S.A. and Los Piques S.A. (in 2007). In 2009 our Los Piques S.A. business changed its name to Weyerhaeuser Productos S.A. and launched the Lumin™ brand of sustainable plywood products.

Weyerhaeuser Uruguay, Colonvade and Weyerhaeuser Productos’ total land base as of the first quarter of 2008 was 140,000 hectares distributed in the Departments of Rivera, Tacuarembó, Cerro Largo and Trienta y Tres. About 40 percent of this land is planted with pine, eucalyptus and poplar.

Depending on its suitability, non-forested land is destined to other uses such as cattle and sheep grazing, agriculture for biofuels, apiculture or left in its natural state as environmental reserve tracts.

Harvesting operations began in 2005 with the first commercial thinning operations on company land. Harvests have a projected annual rotation volume of 4.5 million cubic meters of raw material in the next decade. Our plywood plant in Tacuarembó exports product to Europe, Latin America and the United States.

The company’s first plywood and veneer mill began operating in Tacuarembó in June 2006. In 2007, the company announced the continuation of its industrial growth with new investments in Tacuarembó that will be complemented by expansion of its plantation acquisitions. Both investments will include renewable energy facilities using mill residuals and biomass fuel sources. Further analysis is being conducted for manufacturing investments to include plants for biofuels, engineered wood products and lumber. A total of five plants distributed between the Departments of Rivera, Tacuarembó and Cerro Largo are anticipated. Due to the positive economic impact these investments will have on the interior of Uruguay and its regional economies, both Colonvade and Los Piques were named “Projects of National Interest” in 1999 and 2004.

Currently, Weyerhaeuser Uruguay has a total of 450 employees primarily concentrated in the city of Tacuarembó. Administratively, the company has 13 employees in Montevideo. The company also has a contractor work force of 1,200 workers. As we continue to grow our harvesting, manufacturing and transportation operations, this figure could grow to 3,000 direct jobs, with another 6,000 indirect jobs created by supporting businesses and services. Ninety percent of these jobs will be based in the interior departments.
