In Alberta, Weyerhaeuser grows and harvests trees on three Forest Management Agreement Areas. These are near our facilities in Drayton Valley, Edson and Grande Prairie. We manage about 2.14 million hectares (5.3 million acres) in Alberta. Each year we harvest less than 1 percent of that land and plant millions of seedlings—about 8 million in 2004.
We want to ensure there will be forests for generations to come, so our forest operations in Alberta are certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® standard and our environmental management system is aligned with the ISO 14001 standard (an international standard for Environmental Management Systems).
These Alberta forests produce building products (dimension lumber, oriented strand board and engineered lumber) and pulp for paper. Most of these products are sold in either the United States or Canada.
In 2002 Weyerhaeuser received Alberta's Triple Bottom Line Award of Distinction. We’re proud to be recognized as a company that demonstrates a commitment not just to achieving financial success but also to operating with environmental responsibility and supporting the communities where we operate.
