Pasquia Porcupine Twenty-Year Forest Management Plan
20-Year Forest Management Plan
A Twenty Year Forest Management Plan (FMP) for the Pasquia Porcupine Forest Management Area was approved on April 19, 1999.
Since 1999, ownership of the mills associated with the FMA and assignment of the Forest Management Agreement (FMA)has passed from Saskfor MacMillan Limited Partnership to the current mill owners, Weyerhaeuser Company Limited and C & C Forest Products.
Twenty Year Forest Management Plans establish the strategic direction for forest management on an FMA area. The FMP sets out the goals, objectives and strategies that will guide forest management activities, defines desired future forest conditions and charts courses of action designed to minimize land and resource conflicts.
A vital component of the FMP includes an assessment of sustainability for the FMA area. This assessment uses forest estate modeling to determine the sustainable rate of harvest projected over a 200 year period. The approved Twenty year FMP guides the annual and five year planning processes.
While a Forest Management Plan covers a twenty year period, there is ordinarily a renewal of the FMP at the mid-term or ten year mark in the twenty year cycle. Work began on this renewal in 2008 and by August of 2009, Volume I, the Background Information on the FMA from 1999 to 2009 had been submitted to the Forest Service for approval. This document received approval on October 20, 2009.
Following the closure of all of the mills associated with the FMA in 2007 and 2008 and the subsequent sale of the Carrot River Sawmill and the Hudson Bay Plywood Mill to C & C Forest Products, the provincial government has put the renewal of the FMP on hold. The renewal of the Twenty Year Forest Management Plan is now scheduled for spring of 2015.
The documents submitted to the Forest Service during 2008 and 2009 as part of the renewal process are available on this website. They include the Planning Team Terms of reference, the Public Consultation Plan, the Work Plan and Volume I - Background information 1999 – 2009.
