What Does Quality Habitat Mean?
Based on our best understanding today, quality caribou habitat includes attributes such as:
- Large contiguous patches of even-aged forests, spatially arranged in the landscape so they are not isolated from each other. This provides the opportunity for caribou to disperse across large areas to avoid predators.
- Adequate amounts of the lichens that caribou depend on in a particular area.
- A minimal number of permanent roads, and deactivation of any roads no longer needed.
