Sustainable Forestry in South America
Our forestry operations in Uruguay take place on plantations, and our mills in Uruguay and Brazil use wood fiber only from our own plantations or other plantations nearby. For example, we buy the raw material for our Lyptus® premium hardwood, which is produced by our joint-venture sawmill in Brazil, from plantations on the eastern coast, far from the Amazon rain forest.
Our procurement policy precludes the purchase of wood products from forests at risk, which are defined in our procurement guidelines. These plantations, owned by others, are a mosaic of eucalyptus and native forest so that one-third of the area is set aside as native reserves dedicated to environmental protection.
Weyerhaeuser forestlands in Uruguay are the model for the developing Uruguayan national sustainable forestry standard designed to be endorsed by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, the largest forest certification system with more than 200 million hectares of certified forests worldwide.
