The National Urban League held a conference in Washington, D.C., in July—part of its weeklong centennial celebration. The event culminated with the Whitney M. Young Awards Gala, where the Urban League recognized entertainer Stevie Wonder, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, writer Maya Angelou, and Effenus Henderson, Weyerhaeuser's chief diversity officer.
The gala recognized leaders for their work with social, economic and racial issues. Henderson, who has served as president of the Council of Board Members of the National Urban League, received the Charles Collins Award for Distinctive Service.
"It was quite a humbling experience to be part of the 100th year celebration," said Henderson. "Winning the award speaks volumes about all the work we at Weyerhaeuser have done to create an inclusive organization."
The award is named for Charles M. Collins, former senior vice chairman of the National Urban League. It's presented for civic leadership and outstanding contribution to the African-American community and the ideals of the League.
