Examples of Our Technology

Weyerhaeuser has been developing technology based on trees for over 100 years. Here is a cross-section of technology we have developed:

• Cellulose Fibers – H-pulp (for odor control in absorbent products), Matrix pulp (used in fiber cement), and Peach and Pearl softwood fibers.
• Wood Products – Shear Brace, Javelin software, Timberstrand products.
• Timberlands – Seed and seedling production, genetics, and reforestation biology and techniques.
• Specialty Saw – Weyerhaeuser developed a saw specialized to cut ash-laden timber downed in the eruption of Mt. St. Helens.

 How will trees continue to be the source of our technology? Opportunities we’re working on include:

• Bioproducts – We’re collaborating with several universities, national laboratories, and technology-based companies to research the conversion of forest products into bioproducts. One result, Catchlight Energy, is a 50-50 joint venture with Chevron Corporation focused on developing the next generation of renewable transportation fuels from nonfood sources.
• TencelWeb™ – Lenzing and Weyerhaeuser have commissioned a pilot plant to explore the commercial potential of TencelWeb™, a new technology to produce nonwoven fabrics directly from lyocell. TencelWeb™ provides a cellulose-based alternative to petroleum-based nonwovens used in industrial and personal care products.
