Take advantage of Weyerhaeuser's ideas and investment in innovation to grow your business. These new technologies are available for license:
Microwave Re-dryer
Our patented process re-dries veneers, especially ones with wet streaks, to suitable moisture content for demanding commercial applications
like LVL. We have proprietary plans for a 1MM ft3 re-dryer, operating experience, safety guidelines, and technology support available to
licensees. This technology is especially suitable for high value veneers. US patent 6,401,356 + foreign filings
Arborite® Coated Urea Fertilizer (CUF):
Our patented fertilizer can save the timber owner or farmer up to $25+ per acre through the use of macro nutrients and/or micro nutrients,
together with urea, all in a single granule. Many of these formulations also provide urease inhibition, thereby reducing the off-gassing
(nitrogen volatilization) of urea. Arborite® CUF technology allows the timberland owner to reduce the prescription rate of traditional
fertilizers without reducing potential growth response. We've used Arborite® CUF on over 2 million acres of Weyerhaeuser forestland. We
maintain licenses to serve forestry markets; and, we offer licenses to serve both the forestry and the agriculture market. US patents 6,030,659
and 6,830,603 + foreign filings
Arborite® AG:
Our patent pending fertilizer technology provides a liquid coating for urea or liquid additive for UAN solutions. This technology, which
includes a unique solvent system and NBPT, is a urease inhibitor, reducing the off-gassing (nitrogen volatilization) of urea. We have licensed
Gavilon to serve this market in the United States and Mexico. We have patents filed and offer licenses in many other foreign countries,
throughout the world. US patents 8,048,189; 8,163,058; 8,133,294; patent applications pending + foreign filings
Jet Drying:
Does the success of your business rest on an effective drying process? Jet Drying technology for cellulose fibers imparts unique fiber
characteristics, low knots, high bulk, and permeability, which can be applied to a variety of applications. US patents 6,769,199 and 6,865,822
Stain Blocker:
Bottom-up stain blockers are materials that inhibit stain formation, for example, when decorative vinyl flooring is installed over a wood substrate.
We have proprietary knowledge on manufacture of stain blocking compounds and formulations containing those compounds that have many stain blocking
applications. US patents 5,993,534; 6,489,037; 7,279,226
Seedling Browse Protection:
Packaging and Planting Young Plants in a Tube. This technology protects young plants and seedlings from wildlife browsing, as well as severe
weather changes. Patents and know-how to package plants quickly make this a cost-effective solution. We use this technology in tree seedlings,
but are exploring agricultural uses, too. Canadian patent 2,517,789
Measuring Stiffness in Standing Trees:
We developed this technology to efficiently test tree quality by measuring density between two points. Each device can test many, many
trees. This technology has an active licensee in Europe. US patent 6,871,545
Manufactured Seed Technology:
Weyerhaeuser's patented technology offers an alternative delivery system for totipotent materials that automates the processes of selection,
seed manufacturing, and sowing at reasonable costs.
Norton Press for Wood Composites:
The Norton press offers a new and novel way of heating and transporting materials of large cross-section during wood composite panel production.
It generates heat in the target material by converting electrical energy to mechanical energy. Because the energy is mechanically induced,
it's not limited by metal or water content (like ferromagnetic and microwave technologies). Traditional wood presses typically use large
heated platens to compress the material and cure the adhesive. The Norton press provides more uniform heating, requires no secondary heat
source, and may work with materials other than wood. US patent 7,640,854 + foreign filings
Lignin-Based Fibers:
We own technology directed to the manufacture of fibers from softwood Kraft lignin. As one example, lignin has been suggested as a promising
raw material to produce lower-cost precursor material that could be used to manufacture carbon fiber. This technology could also find use
in other applications where a carbon-rich fiber is desired. US patents 7,678,358 and 7,794,824 + foreign filings
Trim Board:
This fiber-cement trim board was commercialized in Durango, Mexico. Weyerhaeuser no longer produces the product Guadiana, MG-Trim. This
patented technology is available for sale. US patent 5,693,409
