Policy

It is Weyerhaeuser’s policy to reduce environmental, health and safety risks and associated liability from chemical exposures and hazardous wastes by managing the chemicals and materials allowed on site, used in our operations, and incorporated into our products.  

Expectations

We will: 

  • Safely and responsibly select and manage the chemicals brought into our operations, used in production, incorporated into products and disposed of or recycled after use. 
  • Strive to reduce chemical inventories and usage. 
  • Follow all applicable laws and regulations related to chemical management and hazardous waste. 
  • Use the least toxic and narrowest spectrum chemical to achieve the intended objective.  
  • Prohibit the use of pesticides banned under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (2001). 
  • No longer purchase these chemicals or chemical materials: 
  • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) 
  • Asbestos Containing Materials 
  • Lead-based coatings (e.g. paint) and product additives 
  • Use these chemicals or chemical materials only under specific, “restricted” circumstances: 
  • Chlorinated solvents 
  • Mercury and mercury compounds
  • Class 1a (Extremely Hazardous) and 1b (Highly Hazardous) pesticides as defined by the World Health Organization

Procedures

Employees will: 

  • Use the company chemical management software system. 
  • Review the No New Purchases and Restricted Use guidance before purchasing or using chemicals or chemical materials.  
  • Participate in training relative to their functions. 
  • Audit against this policy in appropriate locations and report on progress. 

For No New Purchases chemicals, employees will: 

  • Not purchase products containing targeted chemicals, including used equipment. 
  • Safely, effectively and legally manage these chemicals that currently exist, or where no alternative exists, with the goal of eventual elimination. 

For Restricted Use Only chemicals, employees will: 

  • Evaluate as part of existing approval and review procedures.  
  • Use these chemicals only under specific circumstances or for specific uses, including having documented workplace controls and rationale to be included during approval process. 
  • Substitution of less hazardous materials whenever feasible.
