With two rivers, two lakes, a historic downtown, covered bridges and a history rooted in mining and timber, Cottage Grove, Oregon, is a place where community spirit thrives. Located within the Willamette Valley, our Cottage Grove lumber mill has been a cornerstone of the community since 1957 and today employs nearly 250 people.
On July 16, we celebrated our 125th anniversary at a Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce Concert in the Park. The free, weekly summer concert series at Bohemia Park is a summer tradition among our employees and community members.
“The Concert in the Park was a great place to celebrate,” says Jonas Menguita, Cottage Grove mill manager. “These events bring the community together, support local talent and strengthen the bonds that make Cottage Grove a wonderful place to live and work.”
Jeff Gowing, former mayor of Cottage Grove and recent Weyerhaeuser retiree, opened the evening, which featured music from Jessie Leigh, a country artist from Estacada, Oregon, and free popcorn courtesy of Weyerhaeuser. A huge American flag unfurled near the stage as children danced and played and adults enjoyed the company of their friends and neighbors.
“A large part of our history belongs to the people and communities where we operate,” says Betsy Earls, Oregon public affairs manager for Weyerhaeuser. “These events are great opportunities for us to show our appreciation for our employees and operating communities, and also to celebrate our legacy and the importance of the forest products industry in Oregon.”
A team from Weyerhaeuser was on hand to help capture the festivities as part of our 125th anniversary celebrations this year, and you can check out the video above and photos below to learn more about Cottage Grove!
